Editorial Policy

How we research, write, fact-check, and update every article on PayrollGTM.

Last updated: September 29, 2026

PayrollGTM publishes practical, accurate guidance on Nigerian payroll, tax, and HR compliance for small and medium-sized businesses. Because our content is used to make real financial and compliance decisions, we hold ourselves to a strict editorial standard. This page explains exactly how we produce, review, and maintain every article on the site.

1. Our Editorial Mission

Our goal is simple: to be the most accurate, current, and readable source of Nigerian payroll and tax guidance available online. We prioritise usefulness over volume — we would rather publish one well-researched guide than ten shallow ones.

2. Who Writes Our Content

Every article on PayrollGTM is written or reviewed by someone with direct professional experience in Nigerian payroll, tax, or HR. Contributors fall into three categories:

  • Staff writers — full-time or long-term contributors who focus on payroll and tax compliance for Nigerian SMEs.
  • Reviewing accountants — chartered accountants (ICAN or ANAN) who fact-check every article that contains PAYE calculations, pension figures, or statutory references.
  • Guest contributors — Nigerian accountants, HR professionals, and tax practitioners who write on specialist topics. Guest pieces are always reviewed by our internal team before publication, and their bylines clearly identify their credentials.

You can read more about the current team on our About Us page.

3. How We Research

We do not base our content on other blogs, forum posts, or social media commentary. Every factual claim in a PayrollGTM article is verified against primary sources, including:

  • The Federal Gazette and enacted legislation (PITA, Pension Reform Act, NTA, Finance Acts)
  • FIRS circulars, public notices, and information circulars
  • PenCom guidelines and regulations
  • ITF, NHF, and NSITF official publications
  • Judgments of the National Industrial Court and the Tax Appeal Tribunal where relevant
  • Official state revenue service publications where state-level rules differ

Where the interpretation of a rule is genuinely disputed — for example, following a new circular that contradicts older practice — we say so explicitly in the article rather than picking one side and presenting it as settled law.

4. Fact-Checking & Review

Before an article is published, it goes through the following review process:

  1. Author self-check — the writer verifies every quoted rate, threshold, and deadline against a primary source before submitting.
  2. Numerical rework — every example calculation (PAYE, pension, NHF, etc.) is independently recomputed by a second reviewer to confirm the result.
  3. Accountant review — articles touching on tax or statutory deductions are reviewed by a chartered accountant registered in Nigeria.
  4. Plain-language edit — our editorial team rewrites jargon-heavy passages so the article remains understandable without sacrificing legal accuracy.

Only after all four stages are complete does an article go live. Articles that fail review are sent back to the author for rework rather than published with caveats.

5. Updating & Maintaining Content

Nigerian tax law changes frequently. When a change occurs — a new Finance Act, an updated FIRS circular, a fresh PenCom guideline — we systematically review every affected article.

Each article carries a "last updated" date, so readers can judge how current the content is. We use three update levels:

  • Full rewrite — when the underlying law changes materially.
  • Targeted edit — when only a specific rate, threshold, or deadline needs updating.
  • Review stamp — when the content remains accurate but we verify it against the latest source.

We do not delete published content unless it is fundamentally wrong or legally problematic. Outdated articles are corrected, not hidden.

6. Corrections Policy

We make mistakes. When we do, we fix them openly.

  • Factual errors are corrected as soon as they are confirmed, typically within one business day.
  • Material corrections — where the mistake could have misled a reader in a way that affects a business decision — are noted at the bottom of the article with the date and a brief explanation.
  • Minor typos or formatting fixes are corrected silently.
  • Retractions — if an article is fundamentally flawed, it will be clearly marked as retracted with an explanation rather than quietly removed.

If you believe an article contains an error, please contact us with the URL and, where possible, the official source that contradicts our content. Corrections are always prioritised over other enquiries.

7. Editorial Independence

Editorial decisions on PayrollGTM are made independently of any commercial interest. Specifically:

  • Advertisers and sponsors do not have any influence over which topics we cover or how we cover them.
  • We do not accept payment in exchange for positive coverage, reviews, or ratings.
  • Affiliate links, where present, are clearly disclosed within the article and do not determine our conclusions.
  • Guest posts are accepted on editorial merit only, never as paid link placements.

8. Advertising

PayrollGTM is funded in part by programmatic advertising, primarily through Google AdSense. The presence of an advertisement on this site does not constitute an endorsement of the advertised product or service. Advertisements are served by automated systems and are clearly distinguishable from our editorial content.

9. Use of AI

We may use AI tools for narrow, productivity-oriented tasks such as outlining, grammar checking, or generating draft readability suggestions. AI is never used to generate the substance of an article. Every factual claim, legal interpretation, and numerical example is authored and reviewed by a qualified human professional. Articles are never published un-reviewed.

10. Fairness & Balance

Where an issue is contested — for example, differing interpretations between FIRS and tax practitioners on the treatment of a particular allowance — we present the range of views fairly. We avoid one-sided coverage and clearly label opinions as opinions.

11. Reader Feedback

Reader feedback is central to how we improve. If you have a suggestion for a topic we should cover, a correction to request, or a disagreement with something we've published, we want to hear about it. Please use our contact form or email editor@payrollgtm.com.
